Phonics
Phonics at Selworthy School
What does Phonics look like at Selworthy School
Many learners at Selworthy School are not yet ready to attend a formal Systematic Synthetic Phonics program and therefore need additional programs to support them to develop their phonics and reading skills.
As a school and within the SENSE network we have developed a program and framework to support our learners who are unable to attend to an SSP program to support them to achieve their full learning potential.
We have separated phonics into 4 areas:
- Pre-Phonics,
- Early Phonics
- Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) phonics program (SSP)
- Essential Letters and Sounds spelling program
Pre-Phonics
Pre-Phonics is for learners who have not yet mastered skills in self-regulation, attention, language receptive and language expressive. These learners are at their exploratory stage of learning. These skills are assessed using ‘Pre-Phonics’ framework, accessed via Evidence for Learning (EFL).
What you will see in the classroom:
A Pre-Phonics session is to include
- Attention Autism Bucket (record attention against attention framework)
- Vocabulary session – vocab bag (individual basis)
- Intensive interaction session
- Play based child led activities e.g: blowing bubbles, blowing balloons and high intensity engaging activities. Supported by the use of communication boards.
- Tac Pac
- Sing to and with the learners. Supported by the use of communication boards.
- Singing hands songs (use symbols to make choices) and use of communication boards.
- Singing Nursey Rhythms (use sequencing boards to support) and communication boards.
